So far, many people have been using soft drink to take drug because as we know, drugs are normally bitter and difficult to take, especially for children. However, people do not know that using some types of drink with drug can reduce its effect and have bad influence on their health.
Therefore, you should not use these following drinks when taking some certain medicines to receive the best effect for your health.
Milk
Milk contains calcium which can combine with some antibiotics like tetracycline to form insoluble complexes, preventing antibiotics from absorbing into the bloodstream to take effect.
However, some kinds of drugs like aspirin, daily birth control pill, or vitamin A and D, should be taken with milk to increase the drug’s absorption. With each typical type of medicine, you should ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Coffee, tea and carbonated soft drinks
Normally, green tea is a pure beverage which is very beneficial for health.
However, both coffee and green tea, especially carbonated soft drinks all contain a high rate of caffeine which can combine with iron substance in some tonics to form insoluble complexes, reducing drug’s effectiveness. In addition, caffeine also impacts badly on the sedative’s effect. Therefore, you should not use caffeinated drinks with this medicine.
Fruit Juice
Many fruit juices have been proven to be harmful if taken with drugs. In which, orange juice and apple juice can reduce the absorption of some medications by preventing it from absorbing into the blood.
Especially, according to David Bailey, a scientist of the Ontario University, Canada, using grapefruit juice with certain medications such as statins or atenolol can increases the drug’s toxicity, by inhibiting drug metabolism in the liver, increasing drug concentrations in the blood.
Alcohol
Using alcohol with medicine will either increase the harm of alcohol by many times or significantly reduce the drug’s effect. In fact, many people still think that drinking alcohol while taking drug is normal. And as a result, many of them are hospitalized when use these two things together.
Especially, some drugs like tramadol, promethazine, carbamazepine, pyrazinamide, quinidine, metformin and warfarin are absolutely not taken with alcohol to avoid unexpected result.
According to scientists, to absorb medicine in the most effective way, you should use it with pure water and of course, cold water is better than hot water, because it help deliver medicine to the intestine faster where drug is absorbed into the blood.
