A report on cancer-causing processed meats has been published by The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), of the World Health Organization (WHO), which points out some kinds of meat that definitely can cause colorectal cancer. They have also proclaimed that red meat in general possibly causes cancers such as colon, prostate and pancreatic cancer.
According to the IARC, processed meat refers to meat that has been transformed through curing, salting, smoking, fermentation, or other processes to upgrade flavor or to preserve. Five foods mentioned as below are something you need to avoid in order to lower the risk of cancers, based on the recent report.
#1 Hot Dogs
Hot dogs are the first example need to be listed as a food that can cause colorectal cancer. According to the IARC, enjoying a little more than one hot dog per day is enough to increase 18% the risk of colorectal cancer.
#2 Beef Jerky
Beef jerky is also listed in the processed meat group and was mentioned as a specific example of processed meats that can cause cancer in the IARC press release.
The press release also stated that IARC experts assessed more than 800 studies investigating associations between the consumption of red meat or processed meat and more than a dozen types of cancer with in many countries with different diets. Among those studies, the most persuasive evidence came from prospective cohort studies carried out over the past 20 years, according to the IARC Working Group.
Sausage is mentioned in the IARC press release as an example of cancer-causing foods. 50-gram portion of processed meat per day is stated by IARC to increase the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%.
However, the consumption of red meat is different in different countries, it varies from a few percent to 100%, depending on customs, lifestyles, and somewhat lower population eating processed meat.
Ham is a processed meat that can not only cause cancers due to its processed nature but also lead to high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases owing to its extremely high sodium content.
Other processed meats such as salami, pastrami, and pepperoni, pose the same cancer-causing risk.
#5 Corned Beef
Corned beef was also one of the listed foods that can cause colorectal cancer.
It’s also noted by the IARC that most processed meat are pork or beef, but consumers need to notice that processed meat may also contain other red meat, like poultry, or meat by-products like blood.
Besides, canned meat, sauces, and meat-based preparations are other examples of processed meat listed in the IARC press release as causes of colorectal cancer.
